Victor Mattina (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1985).

Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. The artist’s practice is centered in painting and video, often emanating from the unstable interfaces where technical images encounter human perception. At the core of his research lies a fascination with the indexical relationships produced by apparatuses, the ways machines register the world and how we in turn learn to see through these mediated traces. His approach reflects upon technical images as artifacts shaped by biases, blind spots and protocols of the devices that generate them.

In recent years, Mattina has focused on inducing deliberate errors in machine-based image generation systems, treating their mechanical misreadings and hallucinations as both method and subject. By forcing these pattern-interpreting machines to deviate from their prescribed functions, he reveals their fractures, opacity and a strange potential to dream outside intention. His current work explores these ruptures as ontological interpretations of algorithmic failure where the error is not a defect, but a site of ambiguity and spectral possibility.
